Degenerative Myelopathy Testing
|
Over the past year, there have been an explosion of information about genetic testing for degenerative myelopathy or DM. Did you know that:
- DM is a neurologic disease that often causes hind leg problems that can mimic disc disease or arthritis?
- DM was recognized over 35 years ago, but initially only in German Shepherds dogs (GSD)?
- The most commonly affected breeds are Boxers, Corgis, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and Chessies after GSDs?
- Genetic testing in these 5 breeds is free, but requires a small blood sample submitted by a veterinarian ?
- Anyone who suspects DM may submit a simple mouth swab test containing DNA?
