You Heard Right! We Make Dog Wheelchairs . . .
Whenever we tell people that our business is to make wheelchairs for paralyzed animals, we are inevitably asked to repeat that statement. People are sure that they have heard us incorrectly. Yes, we make dog wheelchairs.
In reality, dogs, cats, and many other pets don’t have the hang-ups that their human counterparts have about being disabled or in a wheelchair. In fact, the more handicapped your pet is, the more likely that it will readily take to a dog wheelchair. Many dogs don’t even realize that they are in a wheelchair. Others dogs look forward to getting into their dog wheelchair or dog cart just like seeing the leash to go for a walk before their mobility impairment.
But why do dogs need wheelchairs? There are many reasons that they may either lose their mobility in their front or back legs. Wheelchairs provide a great way for a dog with weakness or paralysis of the limbs that still has a good mental attitude to be mobile and remain man’s best friend.
Common reasons for dogs to need wheelchairs include:
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)
Ruptured discs
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)
Neurologic disease
Fractured backs
Fibrocartilagenous emboli (FCE)
Traumatic injuries (e.g., hit by car, fall)
Birth defects
Rehab device after orthopedic surgery on hips, knees, or elbows.
Hello MaryKay, Just wanted to let you know that we received Samantha's cart! :-) We made just a few minor adjustments and it fit her perfectly! She loves her new cart and is able to chase us around the house - especially if there is something she wants (she is sooo cute!) We are starting her out slow and plan to take her on short walks when the weather warms up a bit. In the meantime, she has lots of room to roam around here. She seems very happy and I think her old pal Sparky (our other dog) was even more excited to see her moving around. Thanks again & God Bless what you are doing for these dogs!"

Dear Oxford K9 Cart folks, This summer (july 1st) my friend lynn and i came to oxford to fit my dachshund "daisy" for a cart. She was so happy … and kept wagging her tail! We were so impressed with your kindness and knowledge. Thank you again for all of your support and help. We used the cart successfully and noticed that daisy kept pulling her hind feet off of the bar. One day, she pulled herself out of it! And, today she is walking!! Her gait is sometimes a little wobbly, but she is doing very well!!!
PS My vet was impressed with the quality of your cart – and especially the light weight. He was delighted to hear about your company and your compassion in helping pet owners.
The majority of unsuccessful fittings in dog wheelchairs are the results of poor measurements. If possible, ask a friend to assist you when measuring your pet. Ideally the measurements are taken with the animal standing rather than laying on his/her side. Do not try to measure directly with a yardstick or measuring tape, but use a cord to determine size measurements.
Recommended Measuring Materials:
2 pieces of light cord: 1 piece of cord – total length of the animal, 1 piece of cord – height of the animal
1 ring – off your finger will work; attach ring to one piece of short cord
2 yardsticks or other similar rigid sticks
Measuring tape or yardstick used in #3
Method: Measuring technique is best performed by using cord to measure distance and then determine length by holding cord against a yardstick or measuring tape.
